The image is definitely not a 3D image. Just see the size of rectangles and squares used. You can find out that the rectangles or squares are particularly smaller on the edges of what we are perceiving as the swollen square. And inside that square, the squares and rectangles are comparatively quite larger. This is actually the reason why we feel a swollen square in the center.
