Age of Children Interview Puzzle
Lincoln and Michael gets acquainted in a bar. Lincoln offers a drink to Michael and they begin chatting. After a small conversation, Lincoln comes to know that Michael is married and has three children. He asks him, "How old are your children?" Michael thinks and then replies that the product of his children's ages is 72. Lincoln is puzzled and says that the information is not enough.
Michael tells him that if he goes outside and look at the building number posted on the door to the bar, he will get the sum of their ages. Lincoln goes outside and returns. Still puzzled, He tells Michael that the information is still not enough. Michael smiles and tells him that his youngest child loves strawberry ice cream.
In this question, let us think through the mind of Lincoln. At the first information of the product of the ages being 72, he must have calculated the number of ways in which the three ages can be multiplied in order to obtain 72. Of course there are many ways and therefore he asked for more info. Then Michael tells him how to find the sum of the ages of his children. Of course, we don't know what he saw. But he said that the information was still not enough.
Now why did he say so? It is because there must be two permutations with the same sum or he would have identified the ages easily. Now what are those two permutations?
The two possible permutations are 8 3 3 and 6 6 2. Both of them adds up to 14 (which would be the bar's address).
The last hint by Michael was that his youngest child loves to eat strawberry ice cream. The term youngest means that there is only one youngest child. If you see the permutation 8 3 3, it will mean that there are two youngest children. Thus it does not stand valid with the third hint. So, we are only left with one possibility i.e. 6 6 2.
Before going to work, Inspector Montalbano got into the fight with his wife. After coming back from the work he found out that the police was in the home and his wife had just killed a burglar.
The police told that she killed the burglar in self-defense. She told her husband the story that she heard a doorbell and thought that it was me and as soon as she opened the door, the burglar jumped into her and she was so scared that she killed burglar immediately with the knife. Inspector Montalbano asked the police to arrest her wife for murder conspiracy. Why?
You have been given three jars of 3 liters, 5 liters and 8 liters capacity out of which the 8 liters jar is filled completely with water. Now you have to use these three jars to divide the water into two parts of 4 liters each.
How can you do it making the least amount of transfers?
Three men are living in a desert namely – Alex, Brian and Chris.
Alex hates Chris and thus he decides to kill him. To succeed in his evil intentions, he poison the water supply of Chris. Since they are living in desert, he will have to drink water or he will die of thirst.
Brian is not aware of the actions of Alex and he plans to kill Chris as well. To do this, he killed the water supply of Chris.
This is more of a philosophical question than being a riddle or a puzzle. The action of Brian directly led to the result which is the death of Chris. Thus he murdered Chris. In a sense, Chris died due to the lack of water. It is the circumstances that ultimately led to his death.
Step1. Lets say y = x
Step2. Multiply through by x xy = x2
Step3. Subtract y2 from each side xy - y2 = x2 - y2
Step4. Factor each side y(x-y) = (x+y)(x-y)
Step5. Divide both sides by (x-y) y = x+y
Step6. Divide both sides by y y/y = x/y + y/y
Step7. And so... 1 = x/y + 1
Step8. Since x=y, x/y = 1 1 = 1 + 1
Step9. And so... 1 = 2
Step 5 is invalid, because we are dividing by (x-y), and since x=y, we are thus dividing by 0. This is an invalid mathematical operation (division by 0), and so by not following basic mathematical rules
Set the first switches on for abt 10min, and then switch on the second switch and then enter the room.
Three cases are possible
1.Bulb is on => second switch is the ans
2.Bulb is off and on touching bulb , you will find bulb to be warm
=>1st switch is the ans.
3.Bulb is off and on touching second bulb , you will find bulb to be normal(not warm)
=>3rd bulb is the ans.
A couple had to take shelter in a hotel for they could not proceed their journey in the rain. Having nothing to do at all, they started playing cards. Suddenly there was a short circuit and the lights went off. The husband inverted the position of 15 cards in the deck (52 cards normal deck) and shuffled the deck.
Now he asked his wife to divide the deck into two different piles which may not be equal but both of them should have equal number of cards facing up. There was no source of light in the room and the wife was unable to see the cards.
For a certain amount of time, she thought and then divided the cards in two piles. To the husband’s astonishment, both of the piles had equal number of cards facing up.
The answer is very simple. All she had to do is take the fifteen cards from the top and reverse them. This would make another pile out of that and there will be two piles - one of 15 cards and one of 37 cards. Also both of them will have the same number of inverted cards.
Just think about it and if the mathematical explanation will help you understand better, here it is.
Assume that there were p inverted cards initially in the top 15 cards. Then the remaining 37 cards will hold 15-p inverted cards.
Now when she reverses the 15 cards on the top, the number of inverted cards will become 15-p and thus the number of inverted cards in both of the piles will become same.
David and Albert are playing a game. There are digits from 1 to 9. The catch is that each one of them has to cut one digit and add it to his respective sum. The one who is able to obtain a sum of exact 15 will win the game?
You are a friend of David. Do you suggest him to play first or second?
Let's suppose that David plays first and he picks 9. Then Albert will definitely pick 8. Now, David will have to pick 7 or Albert will pick 7 in his turn. But if David picks up 7, then he will score 16 that is beyond 15 and will lose. So one thing is for sure, no one will be willing to start with the highest digits.
Suppose David plays first and picks up 1, Albert will pick 2. Then David will pick 3 and Albert will pick 4. Now David will be forced to pick 9. The score is 6 to 13 and thus David will have no chance of winning.
If David Picks 9 after Albert has picked up 2, then Albert will pick 8 and the score will become 10 to 10. Thus David will pick 3 as picking 7 will send him past 15. Now Albert will pick 4 and David has nothing to pick for winning. Thus Albert wins.
Therefore, you should suggest David to play second.
